One of three Americans hailed after thwarting an attack aboard a high-speed train in France over the summer has been stabbed, according to multiple reports.

{mosads}CBS News reported that Airman 1st Class Spencer Stone was stabbed repeatedly early Thursday morning and is in critical condition.

“He is alive and in stable condition at this time,” the Air Force said in a statement, according to NBC News, which said the airman was stabbed in Sacramento. “We do not have any information as to the events preceding the incident.”

Police said the downtown stabbing happened around 12:45 a.m., allegedly after a fight took place in the street, according to local NBC affiliate KCRA.

A defense official told a local ABC TV station that Stone was allegedly stabbed while apparently protecting a friend.

Stone received a Purple Heart last month for wounds sustained while subduing the gunman on the Paris-bound train in August.
