Amy Schumer backs voting rights bill: ‘The For the People Act is awesome, unless you hate democracy’

Amy Schumer — and her almost 2-year-old son — are pushing Congress to pass sweeping voting rights legislation, with the comedian saying it will mandate “that politicians can’t steal our goddamn elections.”

“The short version is that the For the People Act is awesome, unless you hate democracy. And I know that you don’t, you love democracy,” Schumer says in a video released Thursday by the anti-corruption nonprofit RepresentUs.

The “Trainwreck” star says at the beginning of the video that the legislation is so important to her that she’s willing to entice viewers to watch the entire clip by promising to feature her young son, Gene, before it wraps up.

“At the end of the video, I’m gonna show you my son, my little baby. So that is bribery,” Schumer, 39, tells the camera.

The For the People Act, known also as H.R. 1 and S.1, is a top priority for Democrats. Among other things, the legislation would require all states to offer mail-in ballots and automatic voter registration, as well as the implementation of new voting machines. It would also create an independent nonpartisan redistricting commission in an effort to get rid of partisan gerrymandering.

Some GOP lawmakers have argued that the expansion of voting rights could essentially federalize the elections and could lead to an increase in voter fraud.

The bill comes as Republican-led states across the nation are advancing election reform legislation that critics say amount to thinly veiled voter suppression efforts. One sweeping measure recently signed into law in Georgia is facing strong backlash from both voting rights advocates and the leading corporations in the state.

“This bill will save our elections. It is also how we finally stick it to political corruption so that billionaires will be stopped from buying elections and so that Congress pays attention to the issues that matter in this country,” Schumer, who’s a relative of Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), said in a statement. “I support it, baby Gene supports it, and we both need you to support it too. Are you really going to disappoint a baby?”

After encouraging supporters to “make a bunch of noise” about the legislation, Schumer says, “It’s not a partisan thing. It’s not about anything except for how to protect people’s rights to vote.”

Following her For the People Act push, she focuses the camera on her son, who she welcomed with husband Chris Fischer in 2019.

“This is fully not cool. And if you judge me for this, that’s fine,” Schumer quips.

After some babbling from baby Gene, Schumer asks her son, “Do you like the For the People Act?”

“Yeah!” he exclaims.
