Jill Biden wears ‘LOVE’ jacket ‘to bring unity’ to meeting with Boris Johnson

First lady Jill Biden wore a jacket with the word “LOVE” on the back when meeting with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his wife Carrie Johnson on Thursday, telling reporters it was meant as a show of “unity.”

The jacket was seen by some as an effort to draw a contrast with former first lady Melania Trump, who on a trip to visit a migrant detention center in 2018 wore a jacket that said “I really don’t care, do you?,” attracting massive attention and spurring controversy.

Jill Biden did not mention her predecessor when answering a question about the jacket, telling reporters that the Bidens are “bringing love from America.”

“This is a global conference and we are trying to bring unity across the globe and I think it’s needed right now, that people feel a sense of unity from all the countries and feel a sense hope after this year of the pandemic,” Biden said.

The first lady and Carrie Johnson are having tea with one another on Thursday as President Biden and the U.K. prime minister huddle for their first in-person meeting since Biden took office in January, ahead of the Group of Seven (G-7) summit in England.

“It’s really nice to be here in Cornwall. It’s my first time,” Jill Biden told reporters. “Joe and I are really looking forward to meeting everyone at the G-7.”

The first lady will accompany Biden on the U.K. leg of the trip, including attending the G-7 and meeting with Queen Elizabeth II on Sunday before she returns back to Washington. Jill Biden also has an independent schedule that includes events to spotlight her military families initiative at the White House, such as a Friday meeting with the Bude Surf Veterans, a volunteer group that supports veterans through surfing.

President Biden will go on to Brussels, where he will attend a NATO summit and meetings with European Union leaders before participating in a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Geneva.
