  • Twenty-six percent said they believed the economy is opening at the right pace while 15 percent said it was reopening too slow.
  • Two-thirds of Americans also disapprove of how President Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic, according to the survey.
  • The outbreak in the U.S. has infected more than 3.1 million with more than 133,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

As coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue to rise in the U.S. and hard-hit states are facing pressure to reimpose stay-at-home orders, a majority of Americans believe the push to reopen the economy is moving too quickly, according to a new poll.

The ABC News/Ipsos poll released Friday showed 59 percent of Americans said they think the country is reopening too fast, compared to a similar poll taken last month that found 56 percent of Americans made the same claim.

The poll found 26 percent said they believe the economy is opening at the right pace, while 15 percent believe it is reopening too slowly.

Two-thirds of Americans also disapprove of how President Trump has handled the coronavirus pandemic, according to the survey.

In the poll, 67 percent of Americans said they disapproved of how the president has handled the pandemic, while 33 percent said they approved of the president’s performance. The low approval rating is Trump’s worst mark to date in his response to COVID-19.

The outbreak in the U.S. has infected more than 3.1 million people and has led to more than 133,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University. Florida, Texas and California, three states hit the hardest by the coronavirus pandemic, all set new records for the daily number of deaths from the virus Thursday.

Several states, including Arizona, California, Texas and Florida, have reversed their reopenings and reimposed some restrictions and closures of public spaces to limit the spread of the virus as the outbreak has worsened over the past several weeks.

Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, said earlier this week some parts of the country reopened too quickly and that any state having a serious problem “should seriously look at shutting down.”

Meanwhile, President Trump this week has pushed to reopen schools across the country, threatening to cut off funding to those that do not reopen for in-person learning in the fall.
