Fairfax staffers resign as Virginia lieutenant governor battles sexual assault allegations

Several staff members working for Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) have resigned amid two accusations of sexual assault that have been brought against him.

The Washington Post and The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Monday that two government staffers to Fairfax as well as two employees at his political action committee (PAC) have resigned. 

The government staffers who resigned are policy director Adele McClure and scheduling director Julia Billingsly.

{mosads}The employees from the political action committee who quit are Dave Mills and Courtney McCargo. Mills was the executive director of the PAC, called We Rise Together, and McCargo was a fundraiser for the committee, according to the Times-Dispatch. 

Fairfax spokesperson Lauren Burke is still employed by the PAC, while Larry Roberts — Fairfax’s chief of staff — has also remained with him, according to the Times-Dispatch.

Burke declined to tell the Post why the employees resigned.

“This is a part-time office, so it’s not a big staff to begin with,” Burke said.

Two women, Vanessa Tyson and Meredith Watson, have come forward to accuse Fairfax of sexual assault.
