Hatch tweets link to ‘invisible’ glasses after getting spotted removing pair that wasn’t there
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is joking that he sports a pair of “invisible glasses” after he was spotted removing a pair of specs from his brow that weren’t actually there.
A clip, first tweeted Tuesday by The Wrap’s Jon Levine, shows the Utah Republican at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing questioning Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, and taking off what some Twitter users dubbed his “phantom” glasses.

The 83-year-old lawmaker’s office tweeted a picture of eyeglasses maker Warby Parker’s website, touting a pair of “invisible” glasses.

“The Senator wears reading glasses and normally reads over his notes one last time before questioning witnesses in a hearing,” Matt Whitlock, Hatch’s communications director, tells ITK. {mosads}
The morning of the Nielsen hearing, Hatch “forgot them at home, so it was simply muscle memory to reach to take them off before his questioning began,” Whitlock said.
Whitlock called his boss’s eyewear snafu something that “many glasses and contact lens wearers can relate to.”
Hatch — who announced earlier this month that he would retire at the end of the year — has a “good, self-deprecating sense of humor,” according to Whitlock, which is why he decided to “join in on the ‘invisible glasses’ joke.”
