Poll: Clinton has 6-point lead over Trump

Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton leads Republican rival Donald Trump by 6 points nationally, according to a new NBC News/SurveyMonkey Weekly Election Tracking Poll.

{mosads}Clinton is favored by 48 percent of registered voters and Trump is backed by 42 percent, according to the poll.

The Democratic nominee’s lead is down slightly from last week, when she led Trump by 8 points.

In a matchup including Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson and Green Party nominee Jill Stein, Clinton has a 4-point lead over the Trump, 41 to 37 percent. Johnson has 11 percent support, and Stein has 5 percent.

Among independent voters, Clinton has a 4-point lead over Trump, 37 to 33 percent. 

The poll finds that 70 percent of independents who are now backing Clinton have supported someone else in the past six months. For independents supporting Trump, 64 percent say the same.

The poll was conducted from Aug. 22 to 28 among 24,104 adults who say they are registered to vote. The margin of error is 1 percentage point.

According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Clinton has a 5-point lead over Trump, 46.5 to 41.5 percent.
