The hotel is the site of the infamous killing of Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace by serial killer Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997. Cunanan died by suicide eight days later on July 23.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic events at the Villa Casa Casuarina,” a spokesperson for the hotel said, “and are cooperating fully with local authorities in the ongoing investigation.”
