President Trump’s newly appointed communications director, Anthony Scaramucci, is under consideration to replace Reince Priebus as White House chief of staff, Politico reported Monday.

Priebus, a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, hopes to stay on his role for the year, according to Politico. But the news outlet noted he faces obstacles as political outsiders gain influence in the White House and he and the rest of the GOP struggle to pass major legislation.

Scaramucci, a former Wall Street financier, was appointed to his new position Friday.

He joins other internal and external candidates in the running for the chief of staff role, according to Politico.

Priebus was reportedly fiercely opposed to Scaramucci joining the White House because of his lack of political experience. Tensions further escalated after Scaramucci made it clear to reporters that he would be reporting directly to Trump rather than Priebus, according to Politico.

“Reince is focused on driving the president’s bold agenda, and that has been and always will be his top priority,” White House spokesperson Lindsay Walters told Politico.
