EMILY’s List says more than 11,000 women have reached out to the group saying they want to run for office next year.

That’s a huge difference from 2016, when just 900 people spoke with the group, which backs female pro-abortion rights candidates, about running for office.

The figures were revealed in a longer story in The Washington Post describing grassroots energy in the Democratic Party that is leading newcomers to get involved and seek higher office.

Stephanie Schriock, president of Emily’s List, described the numbers as unprecedented. She said the totals include people interested in running for local school boards, state legislatures and Congress.

A few dozen, she said, are seriously considering House races.

In January, a new organization said it recruited more than 1,200 millennials to run for office following President Trump’s inauguration.
