Trump to release veterans fundraising totals on Memorial Day

Donald Trump says that he will release a final accounting of his fundraising for military veterans on Memorial Day.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee has come under pressure to offer the donations amid reports that a fundraiser he held didn’t raise as much as he had claimed.

“[Some donors] had to be reminded of their pledge,” he on late Thursday told CNN. “[They’re] very busy people, some even located overseas.”

{mosads}Trump said that delays in pledged contributions was one reason for the wait on a final tally. Another factor, he continued, was certain veterans’ charities not meeting his standards and needing to be replaced.

The businessman added that the fundraiser’s ultimate haul is “close to” the $6 million he has repeatedly mentioned on the campaign trail.

Trump skipped a GOP presidential debate in January, arguing that he would rather fundraise for military veterans’ causes instead.

He has since repeatedly touted the event’s fortunes as nearly $6 million, with critics questioning if that amount has truly benefited the designated charities.

Reports emerged last week that Trump’s fundraiser actually raised $4.5 million, three-quarters of what he had initially claimed.

Trump also purportedly pledged $1 million out of his own pocket to a charity earlier this week, fulfilling a four-month-old promise.

Reports emerged Wednesday that Trump had promised that amount to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which helps families of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officials.

“We did receive the check this morning and deposited locally,” a spokesman for the group on Wednesday told CNN.

Trump on Tuesday blasted detractors for questioning the legitimacy of his philanthropy, adding that news coverage of his actions remains unfair.

“I raised almost $6 million for the veterans, including putting up $1 million of my own money,” he said in an Instagram video.

“I had no obligation to do anything or to do so, and I get nothing but bad press from the dishonest media,” the GOP’s de facto nominee added. “It is absolutely disgraceful.”
