Florida GOP spokesman leaving job over Trump
A top Florida Republican Party official said Monday he is quitting over presidential nominee Donald Trump, according to multiple reports.
Wadi Gaitan, the chief spokesman for the Florida GOP who is Hispanic, is leaving his post to join the grassroots conservative organization the LIBRE Initiative, backed by billionaires Charles and David Koch.
{mosads}”I’m thankful for my almost two years with the Florida GOP, however, moving on gives me a great, new opportunity to continue promoting free market solutions while avoiding efforts that support Donald Trump,” Gaitan said in a statement reported by BuzzFeed and The Washington Post.
The Post noted that LIBRE and the nonprofit’s executive director, Daniel Garza, are active in Hispanic communities across the country, spending heavily in an attempt to draw Latino voters to support conservative policies without advocating on behalf of political candidates.
Gaitan has served as the top spokesman for the Florida GOP for more than a year, including Floridians Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, who mounted unsuccessful campaigns for president. Gaitan previously spent two years on Capitol Hill as a House Republican Conference spokesman.
Other Hispanic GOP officials have left positions in the party now headed by Trump, who has caught flak over his outspoken positions on immigrants from Mexico.
Ruth Guerra stepped down in June from her position as the Republican National Committee’s head of Hispanic media relations to join a GOP-aligned super-PAC, reportedly saying she was uncomfortable in a job where she had to work to elect Trump.
