Sanders fires back at Trump: Health care for everyone ‘is not a curse’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) fired back at President Trump for slamming his “Medicare for all” health-care bill as “a curse,” saying the bill was “exactly what we should be doing.”

“No Mr. President, providing health care to every man, woman and child as a right is not a curse, it’s exactly what we should be doing,” Sanders tweeted. “What is a curse is your support for throwing 23 million off health insurance. That’s the curse and we won’t allow you to get away with it.”

In a series of tweets Thursday, Trump ripped Sanders’s plan, saying he would veto the bill if it passed “because I love our country and its people.”

Sanders unveiled his “Medicare for all” plan on Wednesday to a crowded Senate hearing room. The bill has attracted 16 top Democrats as co-sponsors, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

“Our opponents on this issue have the money and they have the power, but if millions of people across this country stand up, get involved in the political process and fight back, I have no doubt — none whatsoever — that this nation, sooner than people believe, will in fact pass a ‘Medicare for all’ single-payer system, and finally, finally, health care will be a right for all in the United States of America,” Sanders said.

The bill would expand Medicare into a national health insurance program and would extend insurance to every U.S. resident without premiums, co-payments or deductibles.

Trump’s White House had previously blasted Sanders’s bill, calling it a “horrible idea.”

“I can’t think of anything worse than having government be more involved in your health care instead of less involved,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday.
