Clinton camp on email investigation: ‘This matter is now resolved’

Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign said Tuesday that it considers the federal investigation into her private email setup closed.

“We are pleased that the career officials handling this case have determined that no further action by the Department is appropriate,” spokesman Brian Fallon said in a statement.

{mosads}“As the secretary has long said, it was a mistake to use her personal email and she would not do it again. We are glad that this matter is now resolved.”

FBI Director James Comey earlier Tuesday said his agency would not recommend criminal charges against the former secretary of State.

“Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statues regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case,” he said at the FBI’s headquarters in Washington.

“We are expressing to Justice our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.”

Comey criticized Clinton’s handling of potentially sensitive national intelligence, however.

“Although we did not find clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information,” he said.

The FBI’s decision effectively wraps up the federal investigation that has loomed over Clinton’s White House run for nearly a year.

Authorities interviewed Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, at the agency’s headquarters on Saturday.

Attorney General Loretta Lynch said last Friday she would accept any recommendations from the FBI and career prosecutors over the matter.

Clinton’s likely challenger in the general election, Donald Trump, said Tuesday that the FBI’s decision shows the “system is rigged.” 

“FBI director said Crooked Hillary compromised our national security,” Trump tweeted. “No charges. Wow!”
