Labor Dept. employee ran bootleg movie operation: report
A former Labor Department employee admitted Friday he oversaw a bootleg movie operation in the agency, according to a report.
Ricardo Taylor, 57, received 24 months of probation with no prison time after pleading guilty to a charge of violating federal copyright law, CNN reported.
{mosads}Court documents say Taylor served at Labor for three decades as the agency’s mailroom supervisor.
He used a five-bay DVD burner to create and sell pirated films.
Taylor launched his practice in 2008, charging $4-$5 for his counterfeit products during work hours, court documents indicate.
Taylor used his agency email address and contacts to help his colleagues place orders. He exited the agency in 2013, making more than $19,000 off 1,268 pirated movies during that year alone.
Court documents reveal that Taylor kept a sales ledger listing his customers’ names, CNN reported. It added that his records are not available publicly.
Taylor reportedly worked as a movie theater manager along with his position at the Department of Labor.
