Parkland student surpasses NRA in Twitter followers

A survivor of the Florida high school shooting who has become a vocal advocate for gun control has surpassed the National Rifle Association and its top spokesperson in Twitter followers in less than two weeks.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student Emma Gonzalez came to national prominence for her emotional 11-minute speech calling out lawmakers and the NRA in the wake of the deadly shooting at her school that killed 17 people.
Gonzalez’s Twitter account, which was set up this month, now has more than 950,000 followers.
Over the weekend, Gonzalez surpassed both the NRA’s official account, which has 585,000 followers, and NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch, who has 781,000, in total Twitter followers.
Gonzalez and her classmates have turned to activism in the last two weeks, appearing on television shows and a CNN town hall debate on gun control, where Gonzalez sparred with Loesch.
Gonzalez and her classmates are returning to school Monday for the first time since the Feb. 14 shooting. Classes are scheduled to start on Wednesday, two weeks after the shooting.
