Trump administration says it has completed initial reunifications

The Trump administration on Thursday said it has reunited with their parents all eligible children under five years old.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), 57 such children out of the 103 in HHS custody were reunified with parents, completing the effort two days after a court-mandated deadline.

The agency said the 46 other children were not eligible for reunification under court guidelines.

Federal agencies have been ordered to return children older than 5 to their families by July 26. HHS has said there are “under 3,000” such children.

The Trump administration separated the families as part of its “zero tolerance” strategy to criminally prosecute all immigrants who cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally, including those who are seeking asylum.

This developing report will be updated.
